Advisory Board Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a community advisory board (CAB)?
A CAB is made up of community members and leaders who advise on the actions of the STEAM in Action project, ensuring that the work supports underserved and marginalized populations within the community.
What is a youth advisory board (YAB)?
A YAB is made up of young community members (7th-12th graders) who advise on the actions of the STEAM in Action project, ensuring that the activities are engaging and relevant to their education and future careers.
Who can become an advisory board member?
The advisory boards are composed of individuals from the community who share a common interest, identity, history, language and/or culture with the groups they represent. We seek broad participation across the community to ensure as many perspectives can be shared and educational programming remains relevant and culturally sensitive for all audiences. Community members are welcome to apply to be advisory board members beginning August 2023.
Why does the CAB exist?
The CAB provides a source of leadership that supports the STEAM in Action project’s ability to build partnerships, to educate about the importance of research participation, to provide strategies to guide improvements in programming and to advise on appropriate research recruitment processes that are respectful of and acceptable to the community. These efforts help provide an infrastructure for community members to voice concerns and establish priorities which, otherwise, might not be part of the researcher agenda.
Why does the YAB exist?
The YAB provides a source of leadership that supports the STEAM in Action project’s mission to deliver relevant and appropriate lessons that are respectful of and acceptable to the community. Thee YAB help provide a safe space for young community members to voice their concerns and steer the direction of summer camps over the following years.
How long will the advisory boards function?
The STEAM in Action project will produce summer camps through 2026, however work within the CAB and YAB will be ongoing, with the hope that they may continue beyond the current projection of the SEPA project.
