STEAM in Action has 3 Youth Advisory Boards (YABs)! The meetings are a time for middle and high schoolers to come together, help guide the STEAM in Action project, share ideas, and strategize on how to support their local communities!
All 3 YABs will hold a meeting on Friday, Oct 30 at the time and location indicated below:

What is a Youth Advisory Board (YAB)?
The YABs are groups of 7th to 12th graders just like you, who are interested in learning about and participating in environmental health decision-making! Currently, there are 3 YABs, each one representing communities from 1) the Superior Area, 2) the Hayden-Winkelman-Kearny Area, and 3) the Globe-Miami area. All YABS are recruiting for new members. Members are paid for each of the meetings they attend, as well as the additional special events they participate in.
What kind of things do the YABs do?
The YABS provide paid opportunities for youth like you to:
- Advise the University on projects and events happening in your community
- Voice concerns and passions about local events and policies
- Be a part of university-supported environmental projects and studies created by you and your fellow Board Members
- Become a co-author on published scientific papers
- Make new friends in your town
- Meet YAB members from other towns
- Attend special events and represent the university and the YAB board
What is the time commitment of participating in a YAB?
- Academic Year 2026-2027
- One 2-hour meeting per month (see dates below)
- Optional additional special events (depending on interest and availability of students!)
- Option to sign up for and participate in summer Youth Training Program in summer of 2027, taking place on UArizona's main campus in Tucson
What is the STEAM in Action Project
The Steam in Action Project is a federally-funded project run by the Integrated Environmental Science & Health Risk Laboratory at the University of Arizona in Tucson.The project aims to address air and soil quality in rural underserved communities through participatory learning and action. The main way we engage communities is through community and youth-led advisory boards and youth summer training camps. Both of these activities provide critical platforms for traditionally underrepresented community members to learn about and participate in environmental health decision-making, and increase environmental health literacy and data literacy in adults and youth. All data produced by this program is shared with and among community members.
By creating spaces for dialogue and community building efforts in rural and underserved communities, this project aims to build a culture of environmental health and justice. We hope that our efforts will increase understanding of local environmental and social issues as well as foster public participation in environmental decision-making.
